Best Seasons for Fishing in Florida: A Month-by-Month Guide

Florida fishing is world-class year-round — but each season brings different species, different techniques, and different water conditions. Here's your complete seasonal playbook.

Best Seasons for Fishing in Florida: A Month-by-Month Guide

One of Florida's greatest gifts is that fishing never really stops. While other states go dormant in winter, the Sunshine State keeps producing world-class angling opportunities 365 days a year. Here's what to target, month by month.

Winter (December – February)

Water temps drop into the low 60s, and many species stack up in predictable patterns. Sheepshead move onto structure and bridge pilings in huge numbers — a rod-bending fishery often overlooked by tourists. Redfish school heavily in the backwaters. Offshore, grouper fishing is excellent and many anglers' favorite time of year.

Spring (March – May)

Spring is the premier season for trophy fish. Cobia migrate north along the Gulf Coast in March and April, following manta rays near the surface — one of the most exciting visual fisheries in the world. King mackerel return to nearshore reefs. Tarpon begin showing up in passes and beaches.

Summer (June – August)

Summer means tarpon — the silver king. Pass fishing on a full moon tide is bucket-list fishing. Offshore, mahi-mahi school under weed lines in the Gulf Stream, and blackfin tuna stack up on the ledge. Afternoon thunderstorms are common; morning trips are ideal.

Fall (September – November)

Fall is arguably the best all-around season. Water temps cool, fish feed aggressively to build winter reserves, and fishing pressure drops. Redfish bull up in tailing schools. Spanish mackerel and bluefish blitz baitfish on the surface. Offshore, wahoo season peaks.
