Deep Sea Fishing: A Complete Beginner's Guide

Heading offshore for the first time? Here's everything you need to know before you leave the dock — from what to wear to how to fight a fish.

Deep Sea Fishing: A Complete Beginner's Guide

Deep sea fishing is one of the most exhilarating outdoor experiences available in Florida. The open Gulf stretches endlessly, the swells roll beneath your boat, and somewhere beneath you, giant gamefish are waiting. If you've never been offshore, here's what to expect.

What "Deep Sea" Actually Means

On the Gulf Coast, "deep sea" typically refers to trips that venture 30–80+ miles offshore into water depths of 100 feet or more. Out here you'll find blue water, flying fish, weed lines, and the species anglers dream about — mahi-mahi, yellowfin tuna, wahoo, and marlin.

Motion Sickness: The Honest Truth

The number one concern for first-timers is seasickness. Here's what works: take an over-the-counter remedy like Bonine or Dramamine the night before AND the morning of your trip. Stay on deck in fresh air, keep your eyes on the horizon, and eat a light breakfast. Avoid alcohol the night before. Most people do fine once they're fishing and focused.

What to Wear & Bring

  • Sun protection: SPF 50+ sunscreen, a wide-brim hat, and UV-protective clothing. You'll be in full sun for 8 hours.
  • Non-slip shoes: Deck shoes or sneakers with rubber soles. No flip-flops offshore.
  • Layers: Gulf mornings can be cool and windy even in summer. Bring a light jacket.
  • Food & drinks: Pack a lunch and plenty of water. Energy bars, sandwiches, and fruit are ideal. Avoid heavy, greasy foods.
  • Camera or GoPro: You're going to catch fish worth remembering.

How Offshore Fishing Works

Your captain will run to productive areas — rips, weed lines, underwater ledges, or GPS-marked structure. Once on location, the mate will set up trolling lines (for mahi and tuna) or bottom rigs (for grouper and snapper). When a fish strikes, the mate will hand you the rod and coach you through the fight.

The Fight

Offshore fish are powerful. A 30-pound mahi can feel like lifting a car. Keep the rod tip up, reel during the downstroke, and let the harness and gimbal take the strain. Listen to your captain — they've seen thousands of fish caught and will guide you through every step.
