We provide all the fishing gear — rods, reels, tackle, bait, ice, and fish cleaning. But there are a few personal items that will make the difference between a great day and a miserable one. Here's exactly what to bring.
Sun Protection (Non-Negotiable)
- Sunscreen: SPF 50 or higher, water-resistant. Apply 30 minutes before departure and reapply every 90 minutes. The Gulf sun reflects off the water and hits you from every angle.
- Polarized sunglasses: Essential for spotting fish, protecting your eyes from UV, and reducing glare. Side-shield styles work best offshore.
- Sun hat: A wide-brim hat or fishing cap with a neck flap. Trust us.
- UPF clothing: Long-sleeve UV shirts are far more effective than sunscreen alone for an 8-hour day.
Food & Drinks
- Water: At least 32 oz per person, more for summer trips. Dehydration comes quickly on the water.
- Lunch and snacks: Sandwiches, fruit, nuts, granola bars. Light meals keep you energized without upsetting your stomach.
- What to avoid: Greasy or heavy foods can worsen motion sickness. Save the breakfast burrito for the dock.
Clothing & Footwear
- Deck shoes or sneakers: Non-marking rubber soles. No flip-flops — they're a safety hazard on a wet deck.
- Light jacket or windbreaker: Even in summer, early morning runs offshore can be chilly.
- Extra shirt: Bring a dry change if you're prone to getting splashed.
Other Essentials
- Motion sickness medicine: If you're sensitive, take Bonine or Dramamine the night before AND the morning of your trip.
- Camera or GoPro: You'll want photos of your catch. Waterproof cases are a good investment.
- Cash tip: Industry standard is $20–$30 per person for the crew on a good day. They work hard and it's greatly appreciated.
- Fishing license: Florida requires a saltwater license for all anglers. Captain Michael's charter covers this — you're included under our vessel license.
