Night Fishing on the Gulf: Tips for After-Dark Catches

Some of the most exciting fishing happens after the sun goes down. Here's everything you need to know about night fishing on Florida's Gulf Coast.

Night Fishing on the Gulf: Tips for After-Dark Catches

As the sun dips below the Gulf horizon, something magical happens on the water. Predatory fish that were lethargic during the heat of day become aggressive hunters. Night fishing in Florida is a legitimate and productive fishery — and for certain species like snook and sharks, it's the best time to be on the water.

Why Night Fishing Works

Baitfish are attracted to light, which is why dock lights, bridge lights, and boat LEDs create concentrated feeding zones after dark. Predators like snook, tarpon, and jack crevalle know this and position themselves at the edges of the light to ambush bait. It's an almost unfair advantage for anglers who know where to look.

Target Species After Dark

  • Snook: The premier night target. They stack around bridge lights and dock lights, absolutely shredding anything that falls into the shadows. Use live pilchards or white D.O.A. shrimp on the light-shadow edge.
  • Tarpon: On full moon nights, tarpon "daisy chain" in passes in spectacular numbers, rolling on the surface. They can be caught on large live crabs, mullet, or big topwater lures.
  • Sharks: Our night shark charters target Bull, Blacktip, and Spinner sharks in nearshore waters. Heavy tackle, chunk bait, and a lot of excitement.
  • Flounder: These flatfish pile up on lighted dock edges at night, ambushing bait. Gigging (spearing) flounder at night is a traditional Gulf Coast activity.

What to Bring for a Night Trip

  • Bug spray: Mosquitoes and no-see-ums can be brutal on calm nights in the backwater.
  • Warm layer: Temperatures drop significantly after dark, especially on the water. Even in summer, bring a hoodie.
  • Headlamp: A red-light headlamp is ideal — it preserves your night vision while letting you see the deck.
  • Snacks and drinks: Night trips have a different energy — more relaxed, more social. Pack accordingly.
